National Associations
American Occupational Therapy Association
The American Occupational Therapy Association is a national association dedicated to occupational therapists, assistants and students of occupational therapy. Founded in 1917, the professional association is comprised of more than 35,000 members across the United States and internationally. AOTA provides resources and aims to promote the professional development of its members.
American Physical Therapy Association
Founded in 1921, the American Physical Therapy Association represents more than 70,000 members nationally with a goal to foster advancements in physical therapy rehabilitation education, research and practice. Members of APTA can connect through 52 chapters across the U.S. and through several special interest groups within the organization that focus on a particular area in the physical therapy field.
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
With more than 130,000 members in the United States and internationally, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association is comprised of speech-language pathologists, audiologists and speech, language and hearing scientists. Launched in 1925, ASHA is also a credentialing association and offers certification for speech-language pathology and audiology nationwide.
Medicare
Medicare is a federally funded healthcare program for those age 65 and older. An excellent resource for caregivers, the Medicare site provides information on submitting claims and appeals, and also addresses general health-related topics, specialty information and trends on various illness and disease. National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy
The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy is a non-profit credentialing organization that certifies professionals in occupational therapy and works with state regulating authorities on issues related to credentials, certification and disciplinary action.
State Associations: California
California Board of Occupational Therapy
Launched in 2000 after the Occupational Therapy Practice Act passed, the California Board of Occupational Therapy licenses occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants. The organization additionally investigates violations by licensed occupational therapy professionals.
California Physical Therapy Association
A chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association, the California Physical Therapy Association is the third largest physical therapy association in the world and the only voice for physical therapy professionals in the state. CPTA gives therapists the opportunity to exchange ideas and opinions about what matters most in their profession and updates members on the latest news in physical therapy rehabilitation.
California Speech-Language-Hearing Association
The California Speech-Language-Hearing Association is the official professional organization for speech-language pathologists and audiologists serving patients in California. Its mission is to provide support to members through speech and language therapy advocacy, advanced knowledge and representation in legislative affairs.
Occupational Therapy Association of California
The Occupational Therapy Association of California represents approximately 10,000 occupational therapists and therapy assistants in the state. Its goal is to assure patients receive the highest level of care and service by promoting elevated levels of competency among professionals.
Physical Therapy Board of California
The Physical Therapy Board of California operates with a mission to promote and protect the interests of the people of California by the effective and consistent administration and enforcement of the Physical Therapy Practice Act.
State Associations: Colorado
American Physical Therapy Association, Colorado Chapter
The American Physical Therapy Association’s Colorado chapter serves approximately 1,200 physical therapists, therapy assistants and students in the state. The organization’s mission is to provide exceptional leadership in communication and coordinated action; the sharing and promotion of professional ideas; identification of trends and physical therapy rehabilitation-related issues; and the development and improvement of education, practice and research.
Colorado Speech-Language Hearing Association
Affiliated with the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, the Colorado Speech-Language Hearing Association promotes the unique interests of speech-language pathologists, audiologists and those affected by communication disorders in Colorado. CSHA provides programs and support, and works to improve speech and language therapy education, quality service and advocacy for all members.
Occupational Therapy Association of Colorado
The Occupational Therapy Association of Colorado works to promote occupational therapy treatment for Colorado patients. OTAC supports occupational therapists, therapy assistants, consumers and interested members of the community through legislative and reimbursement advocacy, educational opportunities and resources and research.
State Associations: Indiana
Indiana Chapter, American Physical Therapy Association
Serving approximately 1,400 individuals, the American Physical Therapy Association’s Indiana chapter serves physical therapists, therapy assistants, students and retired members in the state. Its mission is to promote integrity, professionalism and overall excellence in the practice of physical therapy rehabilitation and provide advocacy efforts for its members and the community it serves.
Indiana Occupational Therapy Association
The Indiana Occupational Therapy Association supports occupational therapists, therapy assistants and students on their mission to promote health and quality of life and to prevent disability for the community.
Indiana Speech-Language-Hearing Association
The Indiana Speech-Language-Hearing Association assists its members in providing quality care and services by promoting advocacy, public awareness and professional development. The organization serves speech-language pathologists, audiologists and students studying speech and language therapy.
State Associations: Texas
Texas Occupational Therapy Association
The Texas Occupational Therapy Association works to benefit occupational therapists, therapy assistants and students of Texas through professional growth and development, and educational and informational needs. By advancing and improving the practice of occupational therapy, TOTA hopes to promote exceptional patient rehabilitation treatment and care.
Texas Physical Therapy Association
The Texas Physical Therapy Association empowers physical therapists, therapy assistants, students and other professionals throughout the state by representing the physical therapy profession and its areas of practice. The organization’s mission is to promote excellence in physical therapy rehabilitation through education, resources and advocacy.
Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association
The Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association supports speech-language pathologists, audiologists and other speech therapy professionals by promoting professional growth, high ethical standards and representing the best interests of the speech and language therapy field in legislation and regulation. Through this, the organization hopes to provide evidence-based quality care for patients with communicative disorders.
